Solar rebates in Australia are financial incentives offered by the government to encourage the installation of solar panels on residential and commercial properties. These rebates aim to reduce the upfront cost of installing solar systems and make them more affordable for consumers.

The Australian government offers several Solar rebates to promote the adoption of renewable energy. The most well-known Rebate is the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES), which provides homeowners and businesses with a discount on the cost of installing eligible Solar systems.

Under the SRES, the government issues Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) to eligible Solar system owners. The number of STCs received depends on the system’s size, location, and the amount of electricity it is expected to generate. These STCs can then be sold to electricity retailers, who are required by law to purchase a certain number of certificates each year. The money received from selling the STCs can be used to reduce the upfront cost of the Solar system installation.

Additionally, some states and territories in Australia offer their own Solar rebates and incentives. For example, the New South Wales government provides the Empowering Homes Program, which offers interest-free loans and rebates for battery storage systems to eligible households. Victoria has its own Solar Homes Program, which provides rebates for Solar panel installations for eligible homeowners.

These Solar rebates aim to make Solar power more accessible and affordable for Australian consumers, encouraging the transition to renewable energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
